Comparing decimals means deciding which of two values is greater, which is less, or whether they are equal. Ordering decimals extends that process by arranging several values in a required sequence. Both skills depend on place value—not on the number of digits a decimal contains.
Comparing decimals means identifying the relationship between their values. The result is written with a less than sign, greater than sign, or equal sign.

Compare the values and place them from least to greatest or from greatest to least.
Compare digits only when they occupy the same place value. Tenths must be compared with tenths, hundredths with hundredths, and so on.
Begin with the greatest place value. Compare the whole number parts first. If they are equal, compare the tenths. Continue through the hundredths, thousandths, and later places until the first different pair of digits appears.
Adding zeros to the right side of a decimal does not change its value. These zeros can make decimals the same length so corresponding place values line up clearly.
Each number represents six tenths. The added zeros do not create additional value.
Writing 4.8 as 4.80 shows that 4.08 is less because 0 tenths is less than 8 tenths.
You may add zeros at the far right of a decimal without changing its value. Inserting a zero between existing digits can change every digit that follows. For example, 0.45 and 0.405 are not equal.
A comparison symbol describes how the value on the left relates to the value on the right.
The value on the left is smaller than the value on the right.
The value on the left is larger than the value on the right.
Both decimal forms represent exactly the same value.
Read the complete statement from left to right. For example, 0.25 < 0.4 is read as “zero and twenty-five hundredths is less than four tenths.”
Ordering decimals means arranging several values in a particular direction. Align the decimals, add placeholder zeros when useful, and compare the digits by place value.
Begin with the smallest value and move toward larger values.
Begin with the largest value and move toward smaller values.
Order 0.45, 0.405, 0.5, and 0.055.
A list can contain the correct values and still be incorrect if it is arranged in the wrong direction. Confirm whether the problem asks for least to greatest or greatest to least.
Values increase as you move to the right on a number line. A point farther right represents a greater decimal, while a point farther left represents a smaller decimal.
The point for 0.71 is to the right of the point for 0.3. Therefore, 0.71 > 0.3.
More decimal digits do not automatically create a greater value. For example, 0.405 is less than 0.45.
Align the decimal points before comparing. A tenths digit should never be compared directly with a hundredths digit.
Thinking that 0.45 is smaller than 0.405 because 45 is smaller than 405 ignores decimal place value.
Values such as 0.7, 0.70, and 0.700 are equal, even though their written forms have different lengths.
Read the completed comparison from left to right to confirm that the symbol describes the intended relationship.
Check whether the question asks for least to greatest or greatest to least before finalizing the list.
