Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Comparing decimals means deciding which of two values is greater, which is less, or whether they are equal. Ordering decimals extends that process by arranging several values in a required sequence. Both skills depend on place value—not on the number of digits a decimal contains.

What Does It Mean to Compare Decimals?

Comparing decimals means identifying the relationship between their values. The result is written with a less than sign, greater than sign, or equal sign.

Examine Two Values

Align the decimal points and compare digits in matching place-value positions from left to right.

0.71 > 0.30
Order

Arrange Several Values

Compare the values and place them from least to greatest or from greatest to least.

0.3 < 0.5 < 0.71

The Most Important Rule

Compare digits only when they occupy the same place value. Tenths must be compared with tenths, hundredths with hundredths, and so on.

How to Compare Decimals Using Place Value

Begin with the greatest place value. Compare the whole number parts first. If they are equal, compare the tenths. Continue through the hundredths, thousandths, and later places until the first different pair of digits appears.

First decimal 0.71
Second decimal 0.30
Whole numbers
Both whole-number parts are 0, so continue to the tenths.
Tenths
The first decimal has 7 tenths and the second has 3 tenths.
Conclusion
Because 7 tenths is greater than 3 tenths, 0.71 is greater than 0.30.
Once you find the first different digits, you can stop. Later digits cannot reverse the comparison.

Use Placeholder Zeros to Compare Decimals

Adding zeros to the right side of a decimal does not change its value. These zeros can make decimals the same length so corresponding place values line up clearly.

0.7 = 0.70

Equivalent Decimal Forms

0.6 = 0.60 = 0.600

Each number represents six tenths. The added zeros do not create additional value.

Align Unequal Lengths

4.08 and 4.80

Writing 4.8 as 4.80 shows that 4.08 is less because 0 tenths is less than 8 tenths.

Where You Add the Zero Matters

You may add zeros at the far right of a decimal without changing its value. Inserting a zero between existing digits can change every digit that follows. For example, 0.45 and 0.405 are not equal.

Begin with the smallest value and move toward larger values.

Greatest to Least

Begin with the largest value and move toward smaller values.

0.63 > 0.4 > 0.25

Order 0.45, 0.405, 0.5, and 0.055.

  1. Write each value through the thousandths place.
  2. Compare 0.450, 0.405, 0.500, and 0.055.
  3. Start with the smallest tenths digit.
  4. Continue comparing matching places when tenths are equal.

Check the Requested Direction

A list can contain the correct values and still be incorrect if it is arranged in the wrong direction. Confirm whether the problem asks for least to greatest or greatest to least.

Values increase as you move to the right on a number line. A point farther right represents a greater decimal, while a point farther left represents a smaller decimal.
