Learn how to count cubes systematically, determine how many faces are painted, and avoid losing track of hidden cubes.
In DAT cube counting questions, you are shown a three-dimensional structure made from identical cubes. You must determine how many individual cubes have a specific number of painted faces.
The main challenge is keeping track of every cube, including cubes that are partially hidden behind or underneath other cubes.
Cube counting questions test your ability to interpret a three-dimensional structure, identify each individual cube, and determine how many of its faces are exposed to paint.
You must understand how cubes are stacked, supported, and connected even when part of the structure is hidden.
Each cube can have zero through five painted faces depending on where it is located within the structure.
A repeatable counting order helps ensure that every cube is counted once and only once.
Some cubes may not be fully visible but must exist to support the cubes placed above them.
A face is painted when it is exposed on the outside of the completed structure. A face touching another cube is not exposed and therefore is not painted.
The cube is completely surrounded by other cubes, so none of its faces are exposed.
Only one face is visible on the exterior of the structure.
Two faces are exposed, often because the cube lies along an outer edge.
Three faces are exposed, which commonly occurs at an outside corner.
The cube touches other cubes on only two of its six faces.
The cube touches the structure on only one face, leaving its other five faces exposed.
Begin with six total faces. For every face touching another cube, subtract one exposed face.
Separate the structure into horizontal layers, beginning with the bottom level and moving upward.
Move through the base in a consistent order, such as from left to right and front to back.
For every upper cube, confirm that the necessary cube or cubes beneath it have already been counted.
For each cube, identify which faces touch neighboring cubes and which faces remain exposed.
Place each cube into the zero-, one-, two-, three-, four-, or five-painted-face group.
Add the category totals and confirm that they equal the total number of cubes in the structure.
Instead of trying to remember every cube mentally, record each cube as you inspect it. A tally table prevents double counting and makes it easier to answer several questions about the same structure.

Once the structure is fully counted, you can answer questions about any painted-face category without analyzing the entire figure again.
Complete one horizontal level before moving to the next so that your path through the structure remains organized.
Move left to right or front to back every time. Changing directions increases the risk of skipping or repeating cubes.
Treat each cube as completed after assigning it to a painted-face category, then move on.
Whenever you see an elevated cube, immediately verify the cubes that must exist below it.
Determine which faces touch neighboring cubes. Do not rely only on how many faces are visible from the drawing’s viewpoint.
A completed tally can answer several questions about the same structure without requiring a new count.
Add all painted-face categories. Their sum should match the number of cubes you identified in the full structure.
First develop a reliable system. Speed improves naturally once your counting order becomes automatic.
Some cubes are hidden behind or beneath others. Include every cube required by the structure.
A face may be exposed even if it is not visible from the viewing angle. Count exposed surfaces, not merely the surfaces shown directly.
Elevated cubes need support beneath them. Trace each stack down to the base.
A cube may be visible from more than one side. Use a consistent path so each cube is recorded only once.
A cube touching another cube beneath it has a covered bottom face. Include vertical contacts when determining painted faces.
Fully tally the structure once. Recounting from the beginning wastes time and can introduce inconsistent totals.
