DAT Cube Counting Guide

Learn how to count cubes systematically, determine how many faces are painted, and avoid losing track of hidden cubes.

In DAT cube counting questions, you are shown a three-dimensional structure made from identical cubes. You must determine how many individual cubes have a specific number of painted faces.

The main challenge is keeping track of every cube, including cubes that are partially hidden behind or underneath other cubes.

The Basic Task

What Is DAT Cube Counting?

Cube counting questions test your ability to interpret a three-dimensional structure, identify each individual cube, and determine how many of its faces are exposed to paint.

You must understand how cubes are stacked, supported, and connected even when part of the structure is hidden.

Each cube can have zero through five painted faces depending on where it is located within the structure.

Understand the Surface

How Painted Faces Are Determined

A face is painted when it is exposed on the outside of the completed structure. A face touching another cube is not exposed and therefore is not painted.

The cube is completely surrounded by other cubes, so none of its faces are exposed.

One Painted Face

Only one face is visible on the exterior of the structure.

Two Painted Faces

Two faces are exposed, often because the cube lies along an outer edge.

Three Painted Faces

Three faces are exposed, which commonly occurs at an outside corner.

Four Painted Faces

The cube touches other cubes on only two of its six faces.

Five Painted Faces

The cube touches the structure on only one face, leaving its other five faces exposed.

The Contact Rule

Begin with six total faces. For every face touching another cube, subtract one exposed face.

Look Beneath the Surface

Recognizing Hidden and Supporting Cubes

A cube positioned above the ground must be supported by another cube directly beneath it. That supporting cube may be partially or completely hidden from view.

Trace Every Vertical Stack

When you see a cube on an upper level, follow the stack downward and account for every cube needed beneath it.

Do Not Assume Empty Space

A visible upper cube cannot float. Unless the structure indicates otherwise, it requires support from below.

Separate Visibility From Existence

A cube can exist even when none of its front, side, or top faces are directly visible.

Count Hidden Cubes Once

Add hidden cubes to your structural count, but be careful not to count the same supporting cube from two different viewpoints.

Never count only the cubes you can clearly see. Count the complete structure required to support every visible level.

Identify the Levels

Separate the structure into horizontal layers, beginning with the bottom level and moving upward.

Count the Bottom Layer

Move through the base in a consistent order, such as from left to right and front to back.

Add Supporting Cubes

For every upper cube, confirm that the necessary cube or cubes beneath it have already been counted.

Count Touching Faces

For each cube, identify which faces touch neighboring cubes and which faces remain exposed.

Record the Painted-Face Category

Place each cube into the zero-, one-, two-, three-, four-, or five-painted-face group.

Verify the Total

Add the category totals and confirm that they equal the total number of cubes in the structure.

Use a Painted-Face Tally Table

Instead of trying to remember every cube mentally, record each cube as you inspect it. A tally table prevents double counting and makes it easier to answer several questions about the same structure.

Once the structure is fully counted, you can answer questions about any painted-face category without analyzing the entire figure again.

Count by Layers

Complete one horizontal level before moving to the next so that your path through the structure remains organized.

Use a Fixed Direction

Move left to right or front to back every time. Changing directions increases the risk of skipping or repeating cubes.

Mark Each Cube Mentally

Treat each cube as completed after assigning it to a painted-face category, then move on.

Check Vertical Support

Whenever you see an elevated cube, immediately verify the cubes that must exist below it.

Focus on Contact, Not Appearance

Determine which faces touch neighboring cubes. Do not rely only on how many faces are visible from the drawing’s viewpoint.

Save the Full Tally

A completed tally can answer several questions about the same structure without requiring a new count.

Verify With the Total Cube Count

Add all painted-face categories. Their sum should match the number of cubes you identified in the full structure.

What to Avoid

Common Cube Counting Mistakes

Counting Only Visible Cubes

Some cubes are hidden behind or beneath others. Include every cube required by the structure.

Confusing Visible Faces With Painted Faces

A face may be exposed even if it is not visible from the viewing angle. Count exposed surfaces, not merely the surfaces shown directly.

Forgetting Supporting Cubes

Elevated cubes need support beneath them. Trace each stack down to the base.

Counting the Same Cube Twice

A cube may be visible from more than one side. Use a consistent path so each cube is recorded only once.

Forgetting Contact on the Bottom

A cube touching another cube beneath it has a covered bottom face. Include vertical contacts when determining painted faces.

Recounting for Every Question

Fully tally the structure once. Recounting from the beginning wastes time and can introduce inconsistent totals.
