Identify the x-coordinate
The first number in an ordered pair tells you how far to move horizontally.
Choose the correct answer.
In an ordered pair (x, y), the x-coordinate comes first.
Coordinate Plane Reference
Move horizontally using x first, then vertically using y.
The second coordinate tells you how far to move up or down.
Positive x and positive y.
Negative x and positive y.
Negative x and negative y.
Positive x and negative y.
Any point on the x-axis has a y-coordinate of 0.
Any point on the y-axis has an x-coordinate of 0.
The x-axis and y-axis intersect at the origin.
Keep x the same and change the sign of y.
Change the sign of x and keep y the same.
Quadrants are numbered counterclockwise, beginning in the upper-right.
A point on an axis is not in a quadrant. Quadrants contain points where both coordinates are nonzero.

x Comes First
An ordered pair is written as (x, y). The x-coordinate controls horizontal movement: right for positive and left for negative.
y Comes Second

Plot Ordered Pairs
To plot an ordered pair (x, y), begin at the origin. Move horizontally according to the x-coordinate and then vertically according to the y-coordinate. The tool reinforces this order before students place the final point.
Read Coordinates From a Graph
Reading a point reverses the plotting process. Students locate the point's horizontal position to determine x and its vertical position to determine y, then write the ordered pair in the correct order.
Identify the Four Quadrants
Quadrant I contains points with two positive coordinates. Quadrant II contains negative x and positive y. Quadrant III contains two negative coordinates, and Quadrant IV contains positive x and negative y.
Points on the x-Axis and y-Axis
Not every point belongs to a quadrant. A point with y = 0 lies on the x-axis. A point with x = 0 lies on the y-axis. The point (0, 0) is the origin.
Reflect Points Across the Axes
Reflections make coordinate signs easier to understand. Reflecting across the x-axis keeps the x-coordinate unchanged and reverses the sign of y. Reflecting across the y-axis reverses the sign of x and keeps y unchanged.
Three Difficulty Levels
Beginner practice emphasizes smaller coordinates and foundational ordered-pair skills. Intermediate practice uses all four quadrants, axis points, and larger coordinate ranges. Advanced problems introduce reflections and more challenging mixed coordinate-plane reasoning.
