Put the data in order first. If there are two middle values, average them.
The mode is the value that appears most often. A set can have no mode or more than one mode.
Find the largest and smallest values, then subtract.
Order matters for median and range. Sorting is also helpful for spotting the mode, even though it does not change the mean.

Mean
The mean is the arithmetic average. Add all the values and divide by the number of values.
Median
The median is the middle of an ordered data set. Two middle values must be averaged.
Mode
The mode is the value that occurs most often. Some data sets have no mode or multiple modes.
Range
The range measures spread from the smallest value to the largest: maximum minus minimum.

Analyze the data set: 2, 4, 4, 6, 9
One data set can be described in several different ways.
(2 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 9) ÷ 5 = 5
The middle value is 4.
4 occurs more often than any other value.
9 − 2 = 7
These four statistics describe different features of the same data set. Mean and median describe center, mode describes frequency, and range describes spread.

How to Find the Mean
To find the mean, add every value in the data set, count how many values there are, and divide the total by that count. The mean is also useful to think of as an equal-share or balance value.
How to Find the Median
The median is the middle value after the data has been arranged from least to greatest. If the data set has an even number of values, the two middle values must be averaged.
How to Find the Mode
The mode is the value that occurs most frequently. A data set may have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all when no value occurs more frequently than the others.
How to Find the Range
Range measures the distance between the smallest and largest values. Find the minimum and maximum, then subtract the minimum from the maximum.
