Mixed Number Conversion Rules

Mixed to Improper

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the denominator.

2 3/5 = (2 × 5 + 3)/5 = 13/5

Improper to Mixed

Divide the numerator by the denominator. Use the quotient as the whole number and the remainder as the numerator.

13 ÷ 5 = 2 remainder 3

Keep the Denominator

The original denominator remains the denominator of the converted fraction.

13/5 = 2 3/5

Simplify When Needed

Reduce the fractional part of a mixed number if the numerator and denominator share a common factor.

2 4/6 = 2 2/3
